If you are coming from NUS, just take bus 97 and it will take you right opposite the place at Robinson Road.
For food at Lau Pa Sat, it is highly dependent on the timing. At day time, there is currently promotion of Asia food (it was Indian food last week, and Taiwanese food this week). So you can go around and sample different tastes. Also, there are a few famous food stalls like niang tou fu/laksa/tom yam, live prawn/lobster noodle, etc. around.
At night (after 7 pm), Lau Pa Sat is famous for its satay stalls along the Boon Lat Street, as well as the seafood stalls next to them.
