Rocks - Greymouth - Fox |
Helihike
at Fox Glacier was a great experience. There is a 50% cancellation rate due
to weather conditions, so try to budget for 2 days there if possible. Also,
weather generally is better in the morning, so a safer bet to book morning
tours. Alternatively can just do a helicopter tour over the glaciers and mt
cook. Franz Joseph caters for similar activities, but fox also has the famous
lake matheson (best view at reflection point viewing point), so we chose fox.
There is also a glacier track near fox (5 min drive from the village) where
you can get pretty close to the glacier terminal. Get a map from the fox
glacier guides for those spots |

Fox - Wanaka -
Queenstown |
Lake
Wanaka was really nice (on the way from Fox to Queenstown). There are two
ways from Wanaka to Queestown, go by the longer way (crownwell I think),
passing by arrowtown which is nice. We had a too short time in Queenstown,
wish could stay longer. We stayed at Villa Del Lago which is HIGHLY
recommended. fantastic lakeview. There is a place called glenorchy north of
queenstown which is supposed to be very nice and a place called paradise near
glenorchy. We did not go due to time constraint. Note the road from glenorchy
to paradise may be hard to drive |

Te Anau - Milford
Sound - Te Anau |
Milford
was very nice as well as the road from Te Anau to Milford Sound. A few famous
stops including the mirror lake (see map on the right). BUT, milford sound
rains 200+ days in a year, so luck is important! |

Te Anau - Lake Tekapo |
Dec is
the lupinus season in NZ, so pretty nice at lake tekapo with the lupinus in
front of the famous good shepherd church. If lucky, could see milky way in
lake tekapo. Try Astro cafe on Mt John with breath-taking views. You can do
star gazing at the Mt John observatory. On the way between Queenstown and
Lake Tekapo (nearer to Lake Tekapo), you will see lake pukaki which is
gorgeous! If you have time, drive from lake tekapo to mt cook village as
well. A few tracks there. Hooker Valley (3hr return) is a famous one with a
great view of Mt cook at the end of the track. When we were there, it was
strong wind and rain, so we did not walk to the end. a pity. You can also
stay one night at mt cook village (hermitage hotel looks pretty decent and
with good mountain view). |

Arthurs' Pass - Pete's Farm - Kaikoura |
Really
nothing much in Christchurch, so don't plan too much time there. We stayed at
focus motel which is good value for money. Kaikoura is great for fishing
trip. |
