i also want to ask.I am in yr1, common engineering. Don't know whether it is a good choice to do civil engineering. I guess there may be good opportunities in China, so i hope can first finish 6 years' bond here, accumulating some experience, then go back. wanna ask seniors: how is this idea?[tommy (10-7 13:08, Long long ago)] [ 传统版 | sForum ][登录后回复]2楼

(引用 tommy:i also want to ask.I am in yr1, common engineering. Don't know whether it is a good choice to do civil engineering. I guess ther...)呵呵i am very ignorant on computer things, so i chose civil engineering.
your idea sounds nice to me.
i can introduce some unrelated things to you. after you enter civil, you will be suggested to choose a direction for you subsequent studying. they are:
Transportation & Logistics
Infrastructure Systems & Management
Project Management
Environmental Engineering
Hydraulics & Coastal Engineering
Structural Protection & Rehabilitation Technology & Materials
Infrastructure Design & Development
Offshore Engineering
Geotechnical Engineering
i love structure analysis and i guess you love designing buildings right? then you should choose structure.
for the rest,
Transportation is something teaches you how to build and maintain a road.
Hydralic is what we call 流体动力学 in China.
Environmental Engineering is similar with enviromental engineering under chemical engin.
Geotechnical Engineering is just soil mechanics(土壤力学)
others i don't know. why not we just wait here so year4 friends may give some more precise and accurate answers

(引用 何假尾:呵呵i am very ignorant on computer things, so i chose civil engineering. your idea sounds nice to me. i can introduce some unr...)Thanks. By the way...I think offshore is not bad, cos profs of statics do a lot of promotion for that on our lectures even...xixi...
Can also ask profs about that directly. But i think they will only emphasize how good it is, quite the contrary, making it not so convincing.
You have been already in yr 3. woow...that is cool. i hear that structure is very hard to learn, is it?

1.Is civil engineering a good choice? Well, it is quite subjective. It depends on ur strength, interest as well as ur expectation for ur career etc. I agree that they are and will be a lot of opportunities in the construction industry in China due the fast development of economy.

2.For current yr4 civil engineering stu, although,we were told there are a few areas for us to specialize in,eg,stru, environmental, infrastructure an so on, we have not been streamed into them all. Some yr 4 stu participated in a program called “specialization in environment” or something like, for them, their fyp must be within the environ area. Basically, u can know the content of each area by their names, right? I am not sure whether u are required to specialize in certain area(s) by taking certain courses. If yes, you have to make ur own choice.

3.I notice someone below says he likes designing buildings. Well, I have to say that, most of time, buildings are designed by architects and we civil engineers are more on the construction side. Morever, transportation does not deals with the construction and maintenance of the roads only, any thing related to transportation is involved-u will know more abt it if u take some courses on transport in the future.

4.I don’t know too much abt offshore engineering coz there are few modules offered on offshore for us to take. U may approach ur prof for more info. Nevertheless, offshore engin involves the designing and construction of the offshore structures. In Singapore offshore is a rising industry and expanding very fast while it is still under development in China. There are a few local companies, like KBR, which are the top and leading offshore companies in the world, of course, it is not easy to enter them

Good luck and enjoy ur studying in civil engineering:)
