接種疫苗是目前預防新冠肺炎（COVID-19）重症、死亡的最佳方式之一，但隨著傳播能力更強的Delta變種病毒株在各地肆虐，是否要追打第三劑疫苗的議題引起各界關注。權威學術期刊《自然》（Nature）近日刊登的研究報告認為，輝瑞（Pfizer-BioNTech）、莫德納（Moderna）兩款利用mRNA技術研製的疫苗，提供的保護力可長達數年，不需要增加額外的劑量。
《紐約時報》報導，該研究由華盛頓大學免疫學家艾比迪（Ali Ellebedy）主導，研究只專注研究輝瑞、莫德納mRNA疫苗的效力，沒有納入嬌生（Johnson & Johnson）研發的病毒載體疫苗。許多證據顯示，只要病毒的變異不超出目前的演化趨勢，大部分已接種mRNA疫苗的人，以及已從新冠肺炎康復的人們，可能不需要再接種更多劑量加強免疫力。
艾比迪和研究團隊，透過研究新冠肺炎康復的患者、接種疫苗者，發現這些人在感染後的8個月內，體內的免疫細胞可以辨識留在骨髓內的病毒；另一個團隊的研究則認為，辨識病毒的記憶B細胞，在感染後的一年內會持續強化成熟。基於這些發現，科學家認為，感染病毒後接種疫苗的人，形成的免疫力可能長達數年甚至一輩
