when install programs in linux, usually which dir to install?

officially it is /usr/bin,
applications distributed as rpm or deb packages are usually installed there.
for applications built from tar balls, better install it to /local/bin.
for applications built from tar balls, better install it to /local/bin.

/usr/sfw/bin (for solaris) etc

That's not a good idea.
/usr/bin is for those system tools from orignial installation.
Actually you can install to almost anywhere in your local system
but as DJay said, /usr/local/bin is usually the default directory.
