How shall I take good care of my USB notebook hdd & casing?
I was aware that, it's dangerous to shut down the power of a harddisk
manually. My casing draws power from the PS2 mouse connector. My usual
practise was, plug in power and USB, do backup, then unplug USB and power.

Is my sequence correct? Is it better to let the PC to shut down the
power instead? Is it better to plug in USB/Power prior to starting PC?
