Personally, I prefer 9 + 1 method (using Vietnam 2009 Method) instead of 7 + 3 method as mentioned at the end of the post.

Pure Swiss Pairing System only say 9 rounds for Group A may have the same issue surface again as in 2006 (too many draw cases within unexpected short times), should seriously looking into (x + 1) method.

Anyway, the review of methods for Singapore Xiangqi Open should be an on-going process ......

For this method, to use Swiss Pairing for the first 9 rounds for all players, and Round 10 to decide on the final ranking.

to decide the final ranking position of Top 8, next 8, next next 8, etc so that all players are still fighting hard in their own range of 8 by using Vietnam 2009 Method (you can only move up maximum of 4 positions in this method for 8 players in one round)

or

Round 10 below as suggested previously :

5 vs 6
7 vs 8
9 vs 10

.

and Top 4 are promotion cases.
