Personally, I prefer 9 + 1 method (using Vietnam 2009 Method) instead of 7 + 3 method as mentioned at the end of the post.

Pure Swiss Pairing System only say 9 rounds for Group A may have the same issue surface again as in 2006 (too many draw cases within unexpected short times), should seriously looking into (x + 1) method.

Anyway, the review of methods for Singapore Xiangqi Open should be an on-going process ......

For this method, to use Swiss Pairing for the first 9 rounds for all players, and Round 10 to decide on the final ranking.

either

to decide the final ranking position of Top 8, next 8, next next 8, etc so that all players are still fighting hard in their own range of 8 by using Vietnam 2009 Method (you can only move up maximum of 4 positions in this method for 8 players in one round)

or

Round 10 below as suggested previously :

1 vs 2
3 vs 4
5 vs 6
7 vs 8
9 vs 10
...
..
.

and Top 4 are promotion cases.

as we all like to see better and better systems ...

trying to join this year before moving out of Bishan after mid Jun 2010 (also before reaching 60 years old in early 2011) .......

if there are 9 Rounds for Group A, may need to skip the Round 9 on 6月 6日 due to the preparation of

7 + 1 system with one round 分先 (i.e. total of 9 rounds) could be better than 7 + 3 system without 分先 (i.e. total of 10 rounds).

The Concepts of 7 + 1 system with one round 分先 are

(1) you need to win the last round to qualify for Top 4
(since it is so critical, need to use 分先) and

(2) the 7 rounds swiss pairing system ranking positions will decide your final ranking position in the Top 4, i.e. first 7 rounds swiss pairing system ranking positions also play a part in the final ranking.

May be those who are going to 第4届“芳庄旅游杯”越南象棋公开赛 4月20日--30日 前江省美荻市

can bring back the 越南 system especially on the part : --

in the last one round 分先 (after the first x rounds swiss pairing system) to decide the positions of 8 players.

usually, the x rounds is under swiss pairing system to get a ranking list.

From the critical last one round, need to decide on the number of positions for up and down before : --

(1) up and down by maximum 1 position with : -- (coming 2010 Group A likely method)

1 vs 2
3 vs 4
5 vs 6
7 vs 8
...

(2) up and down by maximum 2 positions with : --

1 vs 4
2 vs 3

5 vs 8
6 vs 7

...

(3) up and down by maximum 4 positions with : --

1 vs 8
2 vs 7

...

2009 3rd “芳庄旅游杯”越南象棋公开赛 used up and down by maximum 4 positions for positons 5 to 12 with (9 + 1) system : --

5 vs 12
6 vs 11
7 vs 10
8 vs 9

example, Position 8 can move up to Position 4 only (and not further up) if win in this last round and Position 1 move down to Position 5 (and not further down) if lost .

until today, I still go for x + 1 system, assume you have a good suggestion and I try to promote now, anything wrong ?

both results of [x rounds swiss pairing system] and [+1 round] are used in
(3) up and down by maximum 4 positions with ...

after the [x rounds swiss pairing system], the ranking results of Top 8, say A, B, ...H will follow the pairings below for [+1 round] : --

A vs H
B vs G
C vs F
D vs E

and assume H, B，F and D win in this [+1 round],

A vs H (w)
B(w) vs G
C vs F (w)
D(w) vs E


then the final ranking positions are : --

1 B win
2 D win
3 F win
4 H win
5 A
6 C
7 E
8 G

i.e. the winners B D F H and the losers A C E G use the ranking results from the [x rounds swiss pairing system].

You can look at it from the table below : --

5A move down 4 positions
1 B (win) move up 1 position
6C move down 3 positions
2 D (win) move up 2 positions
7E move down 2 positions
3 F (win)move up 3 positions
8G move down 1 position
4 H (win)move up 4 positions

It is logical for winners of [+1 round] to move up {maximum 4 positions} and losers of [+1 round] to move down {maximum 4 positions}.

Since this is critical [+1 round], could have 分先 if time permits, the concepts of winners in Top 4 and to be promoted still maintain and

do not need to play two more rounds ( as in x + 3 system )

since the [x rounds swiss pairing system] should carry weights in the final ranking for positions 1 to 4 and 5 to 8.

with the latest schedule, may not join this year depending on ......

what is the minimum number of rounds for x + 1 system ?

what is the minimum number of players for Group A to proceed ?

examples : --

minimum number of players for Group A is still 20 ? (same as last year ?)

The systems for 26 players of 2010 第4届“芳庄旅游杯”越南象棋公开赛 : --

9-round swiss pairing system for all 26 players, and

(1) 9 + 2 system for Top 4

(2) 9 + 1 system (likely) for next 4

(3) the remaining 18 players stop to proceed.

heard that Group A [9+1] system is for 30 players, if less than 30, may reduce the number of rounds, ......

Last year, 20 was the minimum number to proceed, hope this year if say even with 16, still can consider to pick 8 seeded players and proceed with below (7+4 system) and to have ranking of all 16 players.
